This orchestra is comprised of the 48 most advanced 10th–12th graders in the CHS Orchestra program. The String Ensemble rehearses daily and performs music of grade VI difficulty. During January and February, the String Ensemble becomes the CHS Symphony Orchestra by combining with the top 25 members of the CHS Wind Ensemble. The String Ensemble usually performs 7–8 concerts per year. Though private music study is not a requirement per se for entrance, most String Ensemble members do study privately. Auditions are held in June for entrance the following school year.
Requirements are as follows:
Violin, Viola, Cello All major scales, 3 Octaves Melodic minor scales up to and including 4 sharps and 4 flats, 3 Octaves
Bass All major scales, 2 Octaves Melodic minor scales up to and including 4 sharps and 4 flats, 2 Octaves
